Give it a try and see how things go.
I have been using the xorg-x11 6.8.2 RCs since they came into portage and had no problems with my primary configuration [1].
Today I noticed that my secondary configuration [2] no longer works. The last time I used this configuration was in early November with the then current ~x86 versions of xorg-x11 and nvidia-{kernel|glx}.
At the moment I am using xorg-x11-6.8.1.902, nvidia-kernel-1.0.6111-r3, and nvidia-glx-1.0.6111-r1. When I start X.org with the configuration from [2] I get a correct 1024x768 picture on the external VGA but only "junk" on the laptop's LCD.
I do not know whether this is a bug that should be filed on b.g.o or if it is a configuration issue.
Is it safe to downgrade from xorg-x11-6.8.1.902 to xorg-x11-6.8.0-r4? Or will this break my system because of the FHS layout migration?
It should be fine to downgrade to -r4. The first thing to do for your problem is check your X log for errors, then search bugs.g.o. It may well be a regression of nvidia's drivers.
