Even binary distros don't want the werror. Trust me on that ;-) Anyway FWIW, if upstream wants werror in their build and use autotools you can grab code that is in libwp* libvisio libcdr and others we use in libreoffice, where it is configure switch, you can mess with and having default off or on based on prefferences.
