Hi there,

I'm a freelance java developer trying to survive with the help of the open source world, so right now, I have two Gentoo boxes (a server and a workstation) that I use for developing purposes, specially in the ambit of J2EE. I love this distribution, and I would love to have all that java stuff I'm using for developing as a portage ebuild (maybe I can contribute here). There are a lot of tools out there that, if included with the distribution, could make Gentoo the OS of choice for a lot of java developers. I'm just dreaming about doing an emerge world and having all my tools automatically updated :o)

About the reference platform, I would love to have such a thing. Apache/PHP/MySql has become a defacto standard in the web, and I think a similar approach for J2EE servers would be great. The problem here is that there is no clear winner in this, although Apache has recently started a project (Geronimo) to build an open source J2EE server. About the database, I would love to have support for SAP DB in Gentoo, as a mature enterprise level database, specially now that they have signed an agreement with MySQL, so they will provide MySQL MaxDB (SAP DB rebranded). As MySQL tells in their web: "MaxDB is a heavy-duty, SAP-certified open source database that offers high availability, scalability and a comprehensive feature set".

So, what's next?

Regards

Hello all,

While we're in the spirit of testing...I thought that I might ask
exactly what the use of this list will be:

1. development of independent java projects on gentoo systems
2. discussion about the use of java for certain components of gentoo
(I don't know if that even exists at this point - or to what
  extent - I'm a gentoo newbie)
3. general help-list for those of us with gentoo boxes that are
coding in java

My suspicion is that it shall be for all of these and more - but I was
wondering what others (including the list owner) thought.

Scott.

I would like to see it as a forum for the discussion of the Gentoo Java
Platform [Reference]. In particular, for implementation of J2EE platforms
on Gentoo (i.e. JBoss, Resin, Orion, etc.). There are many ways to go about
installing this software, and perhaps a reference implementation (in much
the same was a Apache has its overly controlled implementation). This list
could also be for more generalized support of Java as it pertains to Gentoo
(i.e. building of the Mozilla plugin, source build of the JDK, Apache group
java builds and integration, etc).
