Like every option you can have, you need to make sure your kernel supports it. Referencing a 2.6.9 kernel on my system:


Device Drivers, SCSI device support, SCSI low-level drivers, Serial ATA (SATA) support, and select your model. You can use lspci to find out what one if you don't know. For example, my system has nVidia nForce3, so I have in lspci:

IDE interface: nVidia Corporation CK8S Serial ATA Controller

And my drive is recognized as /dev/sda.
