I accidentally deleted the original mail, or I'd have replied directly
to 'jw', but yes, the dell remote access controller (DRAC) does work
when the server is powered off - it boots up as soon as power is
applied.

I don't bother with the openmanage tools - all they do is talk to the
DRAC over an internal interface. As every poweredge with a DRAC i've
used has two gigabit ports (not counting the 10/100 port for the drac)
i've never had a situation where one of the interfaces wasn't on the
same network as the DRAC and couldn't just query it over tcp/ip.
There's a module in CPAN for it, I think.

The server I'm looking at doesn't actually have a DRAC card in it. It's a
SC1425 and only comes with the onboard IPMI controller. Looking it up and
reading other sites lead me to believe that the IPMI will function when the
server is powered off. I'm just looking to confirm this thought.
