Oddly this sounds similar to the problems I've been having. I'm currently doing an emerge world. Chromatix (Jonathan Morton) and I found that postfix or exim also hangs when trying to deliver the mail then ability to log in and su goes all wacky. I found this out when stopping fetchmail from autostarting from my bashprofile(when postfix was in) and after boot when exim was in.
