A little bit more investigation reveals that the gnome package is
updated to 2.2 stable, but a lot of dependancies aren't (gst-plugins,
gstreamer, mpeglib, etc etc).  

I'm going to brave it and try an ~x86 update to gnome, and see what
happens....
