I had a series of freezes before - very strange ones, they could happen on boot, or when I switched to virtual console from X. Since then I 1) got rid of metalog and replaced it with syslog-ng 2) Moved from reiserfs back to XFS - so now I'm not sure who to blame :) Well... you probably should start from metalog, if you have it installed.
