   Not to mention ensuring that the OSS compatibility modules, specificly
snd-pcm-oss, were installed?  I suspect that mpg123 uses the OSS sound
setup by default.  (Admittedly, if you're using devfs, the /dev/ entries
won't exist unless you have the proper modules installed.)

   That said, I'm using an ASUS A7V8X motherboard which uses a Via VT8235
for sound, and it works for me.  (At least, as long as I don't have the
front panel audio connector attached to the ASUS iPanel, as that seems to
cause the driver to lock up once the buffer is full for some reason.  A
bug I've already submitted to the ALSA people.)  I have had occasional
'stuttering' problems, though nothing I can't live with.  I will say that
ALSA 0.9.0rc7 actually seems much worse than rc6 for this chipset for me,
so you may want to drop back to rc6 for now.
