This patch http://people.redhat.com/jgarzik/via82cxxx_audio/vt8233-support.patch when applied to linux-2.4.20 kernel fixes the module load problem. I guess it should fix the gentoo kernel versions as well. I can't say if you will actually get any sound out as I am still testing and I don't know if the sound on this motherboard has ever worked.
