I've had the same problem, when I installed a Logitech USB mouse. Did
you compile:
USB support
  -> USB Human Interface Device
    -> HID input layer support     (This was the source of my problem)
    -> /dev/hiddev raw HID device support

Input core support
  -> Mouse support

into the kernel?
