It depends who you are trying to protect against.  

If you want security from a major governmet I suggest 3des, 
it is very slow but very well understood.

For anything else I would suggest aes or one of the fishies, they
are fast but not as well studied as 3des and may contain
weaknesses that we dont know about yes.

Avoid des, its slow and the key is too short.
