I'll bet that was it. I thought it might be "sandbox" related, but since I don't have the faintest clue what the hell that is, I figured I'd ask.
I'll be reading up on the ebuild system soon as I get some time. In the meantime, what is it about sudo that may give ebuilds trouble?
