Good, that should explain it: KDE thinks the resolution of your screen
is low in Gentoo, and hence makes the letters smaller in order for them
to be regular size on your screen.

The Displaysize setting suggested by Peter Ruskin should sort it out for
you (check it by adjusting the settings in your XF86Config, restarting
X and doing 'xdpyinfo|grep resolution' as above. However, it is quite
possible that KDE overrides that setting, so you have to manually set
the DPI. I am not sure how to do this in KDE, but I use 'startx -- -dpi
131' to set the dpi to 131x131 when running Fluxbox (make sure you set
the dpi the same for x and y or you will experience some ugly-looking
fonts). Perhaps the KDE control center has a DPI setting?
