The Gentoo sources is a highly patched kernel. I am not in the least suprised that you are experiencing differences in performance between the stock .21 and the Gentoo sources. In regards to .22, you have to remember, this kernel is a pre, thus being pre-release; it's not going to work correctly in every aspect at every instant. I hope your issues get resolved, however.
