Did all that to no avail. Thanks for the feedback.

But, I did finally figure out what was messing me up.

I am using XFS file systems. The last time I built the kernel I had selected 
Quota's and ACL's. I'm not interested in which one fixed it, but removing 
them from the kernel build put me back to normal.

Lesson learned.
