should I just switch this link to the newer directory here? Does that mean I need to redo make menuconfig or can I just copy a file on top?

Do this:

1) copy the .config file from your current /usr/src/linux-2.4.19-gentoo-r10/ directory into the /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-gentoo-r5 directory.

2) move the symlink to point to the new sources.

3) chdir to /usr/src/linux, rerun menuconfig and check your settings

If you are going to be reusing the .config then 'make oldconfig' will use all your old settings and only prompt you for new features added since your previous kernel version.

4) do the make dep && make clean bzImage modules modules_install routine...

5) copy your new kernel image to /boot/, update your bootloader of choice and enjoy
