Emerge media-fonts/kochi-substitute-20030628 first.

And then,
    1. add:
        <dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype</dir>
       between <fontconfig> and </fontconfig> in
       /etc/font/local.conf

    2. do:
        fc-cache -f
       as root.
or just re-emerging fontconfig should do it.
