Stage 1 tarball installs enough to get things rolling so a system can be

a while but works well.

But what is the différence with the Stage 3 since all is re-built during updates ?

Personally I use stage1 as a hardware test. If a box doesn't fall over with all that compiling, chances are the CPU's fine and there's no dead memory :)

(Although I did wimp out on my 85MHz SparcStation5 -- took long enough just to unbzip2 the stage3...)
