The problem was, believe it or not, the .config file that came from the Redhat system had stuff in it that did matter. I built the kernel again today using straight Gentoo and I have no problems now. It was a strange thing for me to use that file. I wanted to save some time and get USB working more quickly. I did that, but in the end probably wasted time.
