One thing you may wish to look into is the Intel graphics. AFAIK, the problems with the dell 500m were due to the integrated intel graphics. There is an Xfree86 patch around to fix the problem (couldnt get higher than 640x480 iirc), but it could cause alot of headaches if you didnt know.
I should say that being stuck at 640x480 was the problem, and not the result of the patch, just incase that was unclear. :)
