i managed to setup gdm so that it appears when i fire up my desktop, but it will not allow me to login to it with another user other than root. it is not an authentication problem. it gives me the "the session lasted less than ten seconds..." error message. is there a place to set permissions for non-root users to use gdm / x. btw, i added the name of the machine (in this case "flanker") to the /etc/hosts as (127.0.0.1) because i use dhcp.
