I occasionally use nautilus for file management, but not all the time. Is there a place to turn it off so that it does not load automatically. I had configured my previous linux distribution to do so, but I am not familiar with the gnome 2 way of doing things...

Run `gconf-editor` and find your way to
/apps/nautilus/preferences
there is a value "show_desktop" that you can uncheck. It's kinda neat playing around in there, sometimes..
