lspci can tell what card, and knoppix can create a good config as said, but if you dont want to download knoppix X --configure does a nice job too, then you just need to type your own resolution, and without vertrefresh and horizsync in the x config it will run nice too, and then you can use the X tool xvidtune you can find the info you want to finish your X config :-)
