I had a similar problem with the docbook emerge, and a forum search suggested the same solution as above. I did a bug report for it though, which can be found here: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31155 I don't know if you had an original GRP install but you might find it useful - it fixed my problem.
