Does it work for you? If it does, then I guess it's okay. However, everybody else is able to get it working without having to do that - if it was necessary, the ebuild would do it for you. Above, I assumed that modprobe picks it up because I don't have it in modules.autoload.d and X starts up fine anyway. Perhaps, modprobe doesn't pick it up but the kernel modules autoloader does. Either way, after you've emerged nvidia-kernel, all you should need to do is change the driver in your XF86Config from nv to nvidia and everything should work.
