Does it work for you? If it does, then I guess it's okay. However, everybody 
else is able to get it working without having to do that - if it was 
necessary, the ebuild would do it for you.

Above, I assumed that modprobe picks it up because I don't have it in 
modules.autoload.d and X starts up fine anyway. Perhaps, modprobe doesn't 
pick it up but the kernel modules autoloader does. Either way, after you've 
emerged nvidia-kernel, all you should need to do is change the driver in your 
XF86Config from nv to nvidia and everything should work. If it doesn't then 
you should ask about the errors your getting rather than just trying things 
at random and asking whether that'll fix your problem or not.
