This is a known bug of baselayout:
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33272

the easiest fix until it's fixed is to manually edit net.eth0 and replace
carrier_IFACE="$(ifconfig | gawk -v IFACE="${iface}" '/RUNNING/ { if ($1 == 
IFACE) print "running" }')"
with
carrier_IFACE='running'
