You might want to try openoffice-ximian if you can't resolve the openoffice problem. It doesn't require java to build, but does require some extra gnome libraries. I guess it's a tradeoff in some respects. I successfully compiled OOo-ximian using really, really conservative flags: "-march=pentium3 -O2 -pipe".
