Filesystem errors. Really, this looks like bad magic in your filesystem.
I'll second what Spider says and add that I was having similar behavior with a dying hard-drive. You could be having hardware problems (my drive would make an audible and repetitive "clicking" noise reminiscent of the JAZ drive's click of death).
