Not all that bad of an idea (IMO),  I was unaware of the -vp option (to be honest I should have RTFM'd the portage document more,  but he should still check what options are being enabled when merging a package.  Also familiarizing himself with the e-build files *will* prove to be helpful.  Also I thought it was recommended that flags like USE="alsa" should be set in make.conf.  I personally keep "alsa", & "-kde" in my make.conf as there are few times I   wouldn't want the alsa and even fewer that I would want the kde flag set.

Bad idea, and totally unnecessary. USE="alsa" is all that is needed.
