I'd be willing to bet you're using the disk writer output plugin... Check in the Preferences dialog and select either the alsa(generic)/esd(gnome)/arts(kde) plugin, depending on what environment you're using. I recommend using alsa for everything now, as it all works on my PC here.
Thanks, Tom, you are right ! I just emerged xmms and used default settings. After your advice (seems to be FAQ) it really has some output, but distorted i.e. unusable.
