For making backups/copying audio cd's, I use cdrdao. It will copy/preserve stuff like pregaps (great for live cd's where there's no gap between tracks). You may be able to pipe from one command to another if your read/write devices are different and you're short on space. I just image the file on the disk and burn when its done.
