Thanks to all who replied. I've got it all sorted out, running raid 1 and everything seems just fine. Not as bad as I thought it would be.
...Basically, all this just to say it can be done. This of course is by no means a howto, so backup your data if you care about it and read the fine manual(s) that the other nice people referenced.
