I've just recompiled w/o APIC support now will wait to see if it will crash again...

The previous crashes happened on pure-ftpd (not sure, it just mention this process
name
it is most probably kernel problem. I just recompilted the pure-ftpd for any case.)
The kernel is 2.4.22-r5. chipset - Intel 845PE, gigabyte
+ 1 IDE-raid card (the card works w/o problem on machine next to this, so it is not a
problem)

Here is the latest message :
Unable to handle paging request virtual address ........ Aiee.....

Any ideas (w/o apic no crash yet, 1 hour working)

-------------------------------
Now my home box also has 1GB ram, but every try to use HIGH MEM ends up with :

/dev/ide/host0/.....
kernel BUG at sched.c:1141
invalid operand : 0000
....
Aiee...

MY old kernel w/o HIGHMEM support work w/o problem...
Kernel 2.4.20-r7 - Celeron 2ghz
w/ and w/o APIC (+ bios set w/ and w/o apic too i.e. all 4 possible combination
used).
w and w/o IO-APIC .... w/ and w/o HIGHMEM IO
All variants crashed the system at boot...
Only thing which comes to my mind not tested is to disable Preemptive and Low latency
stuff !?
Can they cause problems...

I have taken look at this line in sched.c (nothing meaningfull to me !!:"( )

Any idea why this happen. The disk is western digital connected as secondary slave,
the chipset is Intel 865PE(gigabyte)

one more question :
00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corp. 82801EB SMBus Controller (rev 02)
what is the purpose of SMBus ?!!

|> one more question the machine crashes from time to time !???!
|
|Turn off acpi if running. also run memtest86 and check your ram.
|
|
|> Warning only 896MB will be used.
|> Use a HIGHMEM enabled kernel.
|> 896MB LOWMEM available.
|
|Here is the culprit.
|
|If you run a machine with 1gb of ram then you need the high memory enabled
|kernel.
