1. Modify /etc/X11/xdm-config:
There is a line which reads
DisplayManager.requestPort: 0
Prefix this line with an exclamation mark (= '!').
2. Modify /usr/kde/3.1/share/config/kdm/kdmrc:
Change
[Xdmcp]
Enable=False
to
[Xdmcp]
Enable=True
