Thanks for your response. I decided that the output of the emerge command wasn't enough, so I hooked up an old laptop running openbsd to a hub and plugged that inline outside of my firewall. The next time I synced, I got connected to heron.gentoo.org and everything seemed to match up; i.e., I was in fact connected to the server that I was being told I was connecting to. So I let the sync run. It seems to have worked and my computer hasn't exploded but I shall remain as vigilant as possible. Huzzah! --Ed -- "It has been said that man is a rational animal.
