AC'97 never had hardware mixing.  It's takes a real DSP for that
to occur.  Some sound servers support software mixing and some
don't.  I *think* Arts does, but that's depreciated  (some will
argue I'm worng on that statement).

Newer sound cards do have hardware mixing, but they don't come
cheap.  Some sound better - Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, M-Audio
Revolution 7.1, but may not work for all your applications.

Some work for most things - Sound Blaster Audigy2, but don't
sound so great.

And there are some - Audiotrak Maya 5.1 MK II, that use the 
same dsp as more expensive cards - M-Audio Revolution 7.1, but
a much less expensive AC'97 codec (VIA) that might provide
hardware mixing and may sound ok.  But I've not played with that
ard yet.
