I've tried emerging openoffice twice and both times I am getting the same message:

not found and couldn't be built. Correct build.lsts.

Install openoffice-1.1.4 into /var/tmp/portage/openoffice-1.1.4/image/
category app-office *Installing OpenOffice.org into build root. glibc version: 2.3.4 ./setup: The temporary directory is full. (/var/tmp/portage/openoffice-1.1.4/temp/sv001.tmp)
!!! ERROR: app-office/openoffice-1.1.4 failed. !!! function src_install, Line 431, Exitcode 255 !!! Setup failed
After the first failure, I cleaned out /var/tmp/portage completely

What output do you get from 'df'? It might be that portage isn't using all the disk space in /tmp but something else which stores data on the partition is hogging...
