One caveat, though: lppasswd is installed with permission 4711 and ownership lp:lp. This doesn't allow it to create the passwd.md5 file. You'll have to change it with:
chown root /usr/bin/lppasswd
Sorry for replying to my own post, but I forgot that changing the user resets the suid bit. So, after the above line, you'll have to do:
chmod u+s /usr/bin/lppasswd
