Several times on this list we have been told how to enable portage log files, but I don't think enough has been said of how useful they are, even when nothing is visibly wrong.
Emerge output is rather lengthy and the "yellow" comments can easily be missed. However, it appears that emerge writes two log files, one with the standard stuff (compiles, links, etc) and the other with messages. Often the latter is empty. But the good thing is when you ls -l $PORT_LOGDIR you can see when the second (typically much smaller) entry is non-empty and read this one. Eventually the logs can take up some noticeable space, but tmpwatch (or equivalent) solves this. allan gottlieb -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
