I have a script called find-new-configs that has the single line:

        find `portageq config_protect` -iname '._cfg????_*' 2> /dev/null

and that works well for finding them.  I also have another one that
saves all of the config files with date stamps and either replaces the
original (archiving the original) or archives the new one.  If you want
