That's no longer true. The initial 1.0.6629 releases didn't work with the TNT2 or GF2, but I'm now using nvidia-glx-1.0.6629-r5 and nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r3 on a TNT2 with no problems.
Kidding? I tried yesterday with exactly those versions u mention and had no luck... still garbled display here on my ole' TNT2 m64
