so now because my emerge world wants 160 new packages, I was thinking of
skipping the next package ( gettext) and moving on till the rest was
complete then remerging gettext which by then will have a new fixed
package in portage
How do I skip the next package when running a make world ?
I know its something like
emerge -uD --skipnext world

solutions are:
1./
emerge -uD world untill it will stops at gettext's error.
then:
emerge -uD --skipfirst world
and hopefully it will be gettext skipped.

2./ search forums.gentoo.org for pye - pick your emerge script which could do this - and more - for you.
AFAIR it should be somewhere here:
