I've been trying to update my servers with `emerge -gK world`, but I'm running into some really strange problems.
The update doesn't seem to be getting everything. If I run `emerge --update --deep --pretend world` on a client after an update then I get about 50 additional items that need to be updated. I check on the master binary server, and these items are already updated there, and binary packages exist for them. I've run fixpackages multiple times on both the server and client. What gives? Is portage just buggy? Here is `emerge --info` on the server: Portage 2.0.51.19 (default-linux/x86/2004.3, gcc-3.3.5, glibc-2.3.4.20041102-r1, 2.6.11-gentoo-r2 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.11-gentoo-r2 i686 Pentium II (Deschutes) Gentoo Base System version 1.4.16 Python: dev-lang/python-2.3.4-r1 [2.3.4 (#1, Mar 3 2005, 15:57:19)] distcc 2.16 i686-pc-linux-gnu (protocols 1 and 2) (default port 3632) [enabled] ccache version 2.3 [enabled] dev-lang/python: 2.3.4-r1 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r6 sys-devel/automake: 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.4_p6, 1.9.4 sys-devel/binutils: 2.15.92.0.2-r1 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.10-r4 virtual/os-headers: 2.4.22-r1 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -mcpu=pentium3 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/env /usr/kde/3.3/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/local/vpopmail/domains /usr/local/vpopmail/etc /usr/share/config /var/qmail/alias /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/rc.d /etc/terminfo /etc/wget /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -mcpu=pentium3 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs autoconfig buildpkg ccache distcc distlocks fixpackages sandbox sfperms" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://distfiles.gentoo.org http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" MAKEOPTS="-j7" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 X aim alsa apm arts avi berkdb bitmap-fonts bonobo cdr clearpasswd crypt cups curl dvd emboss encode esd fam firebird flac font-server foomaticdb fortran gd gdbm gif gmp gnome gphoto2 gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 gtkhtml guile icq imagemagick imap imlib ipalias ipv6 java jpeg junit kde ldap libg++ libwww mad maildir mikmod mmx motif mozilla mp3 mpeg mpi msn mysql nas ncurses nls oggvorbis opengl oscar oss pam pdflib perl png ppds python qt quicktime readline ruby samba sdl slang snmp spell sse ssl svga tcltk tcpd tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts usb vhosts vim-with-x wxwindows xml xml2 xmms xv yahoo zlib video_cards_i810" Unset: ASFLAGS, CBUILD, CTARGET, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS And here it is on a client before a binary update: Portage 2.0.51.19 (default-linux/x86/2004.3, gcc-3.3.5, glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r1, 2.6.11-gentoo-r2 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.11-gentoo-r2 i686 Pentium III (Katmai) Gentoo Base System version 1.4.16 Python: dev-lang/python-2.3.4 [2.3.4 (#1, Oct 19 2004, 18:00:23)] distcc 2.16 i686-pc-linux-gnu (protocols 1 and 2) (default port 3632) [enabled] ccache version 2.3 [enabled] dev-lang/python: 2.3.4 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r6 sys-devel/automake: 1.8.5-r2, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9, 1.4_p6, 1.9.4 sys-devel/binutils: 2.15.92.0.2-r1 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.10-r4 virtual/os-headers: 2.4.21-r1 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -mcpu=pentium3 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.2/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/env /usr/kde/3.3/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config/usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/config /var/qmail/alias /var/qmail/control /var/vpopmail/domains /var/vpopmail/etc" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/rc.d /etc/terminfo /etc/wget /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -mcpu=pentium3 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs autoconfig buildpkg ccache distcc distlocks fixpackages sandbox sfperms" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://distfiles.gentoo.org http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" MAKEOPTS="-j5" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rhea.int.wingnet.net/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 X aim alsa apm arts avi berkdb bitmap-fonts bonobo cdr clearpasswd crypt cups curl dvd emboss encode esd fam firebird flac font-server foomaticdb fortran gd gdbm gif gmp gnome gphoto2 gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 gtkhtml guile icq imagemagick imap imlib ipalias ipv6 java jpeg junit kde ldap libg++ libwww mad maildir mikmod mmx motif mozilla mp3 mpeg mpi msn mysql nas ncurses nls oggvorbis opengl oscar oss pam pdflib perl png ppds python qt quicktime readline ruby samba sdl slang snmp spell sse ssl svga tcltk tcpd tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts usb vhosts vim-with-x wxwindows xml xml2 xmms xv yahoo zlib video_cards_i810" Unset: ASFLAGS, CBUILD, CTARGET, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS -- Jesse Guardiani, Systems Administrator WingNET Internet Services, P.O.
