I bet it has something to do with the fact that the tightvnc X server doesn't 
know the physical size of your monitor. Fonts of a particular 'point size' 
should theoretically be the same physical size, no matter what hardware you 
use to display it. To accomplish this, the normal X server actually asks your 
monitor its physical size, and adjusts font sizes accordingly. Since tightvnc 
isn't even connected to a display when it starts up, and can be run in a 
window, etc. it doesn't know what to use, so it makes a guess. Check the 
manpages for an option about DPI or something like that.
