I don't need kde, so I never emerged kde. However, portage tries to
emerge kde-base/arts when I emerge world :
 $ emerge -pvtuD world

These are the packages that I would merge, in reverse order:

Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[nomerge ] x11-plugins/gaim-encryption-2.32-r1 -debug
[nomerge ] net-im/gaim-1.1.4 -cjk -debug -eds -gnutls -krb4 -nas
+nls +perl -silc +spell +tcltk
[nomerge ] media-libs/libao-0.8.5 +alsa +arts +esd -mmap -nas
-static
[ebuild U ] kde-base/arts-1.3.2-r1 [1.3.2] +alsa +arts
-artswrappersuid -debug +esd -hardened -jack -kdeenablefinal +mad
+oggvorbis -xinerama 0 kB

Total size of downloads: 0 kB

but arts won't compile, with the following error:

checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.3) (library qt-mt) not
found. Please check your installation!
For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log.
Make sure that you have compiled Qt with thread support!

!!! ERROR: kde-base/arts-1.3.2-r1 failed.
!!! Function kde_src_compile, Line 154, Exitcode 1
!!! died running ./configure, kde_src_compile:configure
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status
message.

but qt-3.3.4-r2 is installed.

I have 2 questions.

1. what can I do to resolve this ? (except masking arts)
2. What is arts good for ? Shouldn't I avoid it altogether with a -arts
USE flag ?

          Fred
