  I emerge/updated world a couple of weeks ago.  xmms 1.2.10 no longer
handled "pls" streaming.  It wouldn't even respond to the old hack of
downloading the .pls file and opening it on your drive with xxms.  The
correspondence on http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=85165 has the
following fix, which worked for me...

  Step 1) emerge xmms-mpg123

  Step 2) - open up xmms and go through the following menu hierarchy
          - Options => Preferences => Audio I/O plugins
          - select the MAD MPEG decoder plugin
          - uncheck the "enabled" button on the far right, half-way down
            the menu dialog
          - click on "OK"
