Once you've managed to boot your system, run "grub-set-default". It'll create /boot/grub/default, and then the savedefault stuff will work properly. ...at least, that's what fixed it for me... Seems to apply to sys-boot/grub-0.96-r1... -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
