Do you also get a message about "checking if initrd is initramfs..." in dmesg? If not, then you probably don't have ram disk or initrd support in your kernel configuration. If so, then everything looks right, and maybe you can try a couple of different resolutions, and particularly, bit depths. 1024x768-24 or 1024x768-32 might work better.
