xfs should not be necessary. I am on ~x86, and Chinese characters works. xlsfonts -l lists all available fonts (though personally I prefer using xfontsel since it doesn't lock up the system the same way), more lines than there can fit in my rxvt buffer. Are there any font-related messages in the Xorg logs? You really need to provide a LOT more information before we can help you: (1) Any interesting log messages from Xorg? (2) Config files for Xorg? (3) emerge -pv of the relevant packages? (4) Error messages from emacs? (5) Since you stated emacs and not xemacs, are you running it in a terminal emulator in X? and if so, which one?
